Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is something that my family has only just recently started to get into. I have heard about it before, but never really looked into it. I honestly thought it was just another thing that Disney wanted us to fork money over to, because a Disney vacation isn’t expensive enough, right? Well, I was very wrong! Turns out, this is a FREE activity. Not only is it free, but its acttualy a lot of fun! My 4-year-old son (and 27-year-old husband) had a blast running around Magic Kingdom on our last trip playing this game. In this article, I will explain what it is, how it works, and why I think you should do this on your next Disney trip!
What Is It?
So what is Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom? Its an interactive game played in, you guessed it, Magic Kingdom! This game starts off at the Firehouse on Main Street. This is where you will get your Sorcerers key card (or just use your MagicBand instead), Merlin’s map, and a set of spell cards. You can also watch a training video. The cast members there are very helpful and will help answer any questions that you have! So, make sure to ask away so you don’t miss out on any details! But honestly, its a very easy game to play, and something the whole family, no matter what age, can enjoy together. As a note, so long as you’ve played at least one portal (explained below), you can get one new pack of spell cards, per player, from the Firehouse each day you visit Magic Kingdom (and either continue your game, or start a new one)!
How To Play
The main objective to this magical game is to defeat the villains that are trying to take over the Magic Kingdom! In order to do this, you need to follow Merlin’s instructions at each “portal.” Once you get your instructions at the Firehouse section, Merlin will tell you which portal to go to next. You are able to find the portals with the help from the map that you are given. Once you find your correct portal, marked by a matching symbol on the map and at the portal, you will have to unlock it by scanning your Keycard or Magicband. When that happens, a villain will more than likely try to spoil your plans. Merlin will then ask you to hold up one of your spell cards to cast your spell against the villain.
There are actually three levels of this game: easy, medium and hard. Easy is suggested for first-time players and children. For this level, there is not any strategy that really goes into the game and usually, the villains will be defeated no matter what spell card that you hold up. For medium and hard, not all villains will respond to all spells. Some spells are too weak to defeat them. So while you might be holding up your spell card, nothing happens. Keep trying and if you don’t defeat the villain at this portal, you will be redirected to another portal where you can attempt it again.
When casting your spell, make sure you are standing on the Sorcerer’s Crest (an engraving on the ground) and hold the card directly in front of you. Little kids might need their parents to help them with their cards because their arms might not be long enough. The portal needs to be able to read what spell you’re casting.
Why Should I play?
This is really a great activity to play when the park is busy and the lines are long! There is usually not that long of a wait to play any given portal. It’s a great way to move around and have fun instead of standing in ride lines that are over an hour long. It’s also a neat way to explore Magic Kingdom in a way you never had before. You get to see things you might have never really know were there. It’s also a fun family bonding experience. It’s something that we can all enjoy together and have fun doing! Also, evey time you play, it’s a different experience, so you can replay it over and over again and not get bored!
