It sounds weird to say that going to Disney can be hard, but hear me out. One of the hardest parts about going to a Disney destination is the time period between booking your vacation and actually getting there. It’s the biggest tease that builds up the most anticipation. I would argue the second hardest part is just straight leaving Disney (am I right?). Today we will talk about some Disney coping mechanisms to hold you off until you walk through those magical, sparkling gates at your next Disney destination.
Years ago, when my husband and I became betrothed (#maiwwage), it was the family understanding that Disney vacations come once every 3 years. I quickly learned the hardest part of each trip was walking away at the very end knowing how long it would be until I would see that darn castle again (cut to Doug holding me horizontal while another family member has to pry my fingers off the exit gates). Needless to say, I had to learn how to get over the Disney blues and cope.
Then, I learned how irritating it was to WAIT for Disney. I would get super excited, jumping around when we would book our vacation but then the tapping of the pen on the desk would start. We have since become annual passholders with a new routine and strategy in booking our trips, but the in-between doesn’t get any easier. Booking a trip is exciting in itself but the time period between booking and actually driving into WDW is just straight torture. In order to combat the blues and get excited for the next adventure, I have come up with our top 7 things to do as we await our next Disney vacation departure.
Watch Disney Movies
Duh, this is a no brainer and certainly doesn’t only need to happen when you have a trip coming up. It does help tremendously, though. Disney Imagineers have put so much work into the details of almost every nook and cranny of their destinations and a ton of them tie back to Disney’s animated films. I typically like to watch the films with attractions and restaurants themed after them in the parks to brush up on some things in order to appreciate the parks a little more. For example, I love “Peter Pan’s Flight,” “The Voyage of the Little Mermaid,” the Be Our Guest restaurant etc… These are the main films I like to watch to get psyched up about our trip. I also LOVE the Polynesian Resort and all that it entails, so “Moana” is a must. You get the idea; watch all the Disney movies, ok?
Listen to Disney Podcasts
Just this year I have found a new favorite pastime in listening to podcasts. You can read more about that HERE. Listening to a podcast is sort of what got me to this point — writing this blog you are reading. When I have some extra time in the car and just want some updates on what’s happening around Walt Disney World, I pull up a Disney podcast. Now, I may or may not be partial to the ZADD Crew Podcast, but if podcasts are your thing, find some Disney inspired ones! It’s a simple way to stay in touch and feel like you’re always in the loop. If you want to check out the ZCP you can find it HERE!
Watch Disney YouTube Channels
Let’s be real, we’ve all been down a rabbit hole or two when it comes to YouTube. You start by watching a how-to hair tutorial and end up binge watching videos on how to take a clock apart and put it back together (yup, been there). The point is, we all watch YouTube and if you aren’t checking out some Disney YouTube, you’re missing out. Doug and I have a handful of people we like to follow because they have great Disney content. It’s kind of like the podcast, just more visual and sometimes it’s fun to see what’s going on to stay in the know. I highly recommend #DisneyParksLive and ZADD Crew also has some incredible YouTube content that you can find HERE!
Social media these days can be hit or miss. Some people love it and some people hate it. I could go either way, but one thing I actually love is following Disney Instagram accounts. It’s a great way to get involved in the community and meet other Disney crazed people like yourself. I’ve met so many new friends and initially connected with ZADD Crew Media through Instagram (@thezipadeedoocrew). You can keep up with new merch, check out TONS of Disney small shops, and see incredible photography of your favorite place on earth. Of course, I recommend starting with the fine folks you read from and listen to here at ZADD Crew Media. You can check me out @Tales.From.the.Tower or @LostPrincessPrinting. Feel free to say hello and let’s be Disney friends!
Purchase Disney Merch
I talked a bit above about finding new merchandise through Instagram, but it’s true! There are a TON of Disney small shops that have anything you can think of to accessorize your next Disney vacation. My favorite things are t-shirts, buttons, enamel pins, MagicBands and coffee cozies. In fact, Doug and I love it so much we have our own small shop. You can find us over at NRGTees.com under Lost Princess Printing. Do yourself a favor and get some Disney cyber shopping done before your next trip. Wear it around town if you want. I do, and you wouldn’t believe how many comments I get. Ya girl has no shame when it comes to Disney. You shouldn’t either!
Listen to Disney Music
This is another must in the McDonald house. Our road trip down to WDW DEFINITELY has to have a large segment of Disney music. Our favorite is our Disney Spotify playlist. It’s the easiest way to listen to whatever we want, when we want. The Disney selection on Spotify is endless and we love to shuffle around that playlist when we need a little boost in our lives. I know there are tons of options out there (Pandora, Apple Music, Bearshare? lol), so pick what’s best for you and sing along as loud as you can. It’s the BEST way to listen to Disney jams. If you want, you can check out ZADD Crew’s Disney Spotify HERE!
Read Disney Blogs
Double duh on this one. You’re already doing it! Maybe listening to music or podcasts aren’t your thing and that’s ok! There’s something for everyone on Disney blogs, too. Reading Disney blogs is a great way to get excited and get ready for your vacation. There are endless topics to choose from (tips, tricks, recipes etc…), and Disney is ever changing and evolving. Obviously, you’re already in the right place with topics and opinions, so I encourage you to look around and read articles from each writer here. We all come from different walks of life and are relatable in our own ways. I highly recommend checking out more!
I hope each of these things help you get through until your next trip and until then, we hope to connect with you! Trust me, you aren’t alone in the waiting and we want to help! Feel free to reach out and follow along with us here at ZADD Crew Media!
