“This is Halloween. This is Halloween, Halloween, Halloween, Halloween, Halloween.” Halloween is tomorrow and while I am so sad to see this season go, I am even more ecstatic about ushering in the Christmas season. I have mentioned this before — we don’t live super close to any Disney parks, but we still make sure to incorporate Disney into our Halloween time. Today, I want to tell you how we like to have a Disney Halloween, and how you can, too!
Living in South Carolina means the weather is bonkers. We like to keep it interesting and have 4 seasons in one day sometimes. September is usually still steaming hot, and I must admit, I have a really hard time getting through the heat. My closest friends know it’s the most irritating time of year for me. By the end of summer I am usually trying to do ANYthing to help me get through those last few weeks of heat. Number one on the list — getting to decorate for Halloween!
The idea of getting into our steaming hot attic isn’t so exciting, but getting down our Halloween decorations means we are a little bit closer to a reprieve from the heat. More importantly, it means all things Halloween: movies, music, decorations, costumes, parties, etc… It means #basic girl Christmas is coming when the pumpkin spice latte is debuted at Starbucks, too. As we unpack our decor, I get most excited about the Disney things.
Our Disney decor is our most prized. We even keep a few things out all year round because we love it so much (mainly Haunted Mansion themed items). Having said that, the first way to have a Disney Halloween is to have Disney inspired decorations. Our collection is ever-growing but anything Haunted Mansion themed is a must in the McDonald house! Over the years, we have collected some awesome items from the parks themselves and they work great paired with other Halloween-themed items. The possibilities are endless, but I highly recommend a few key pieces like Mickey shaped pumpkins or HM posters. Keep is as spooky as you’d like!
The second way to have a Disney Halloween is to watch Disney Halloween movies and YouTube videos. Hocus Pocus is one of my all time favorite movies for reasons I could type out a whole thesis for, but I will spare you. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is a must-watch, but there are also old Halloween specials you can find on YouTube. YouTube has an entire “schmorgisboard” of things you can watch: Disney cartoons, the Boo-To-You Halloween Parade, the Hocus Pocus Spectacular, and most of the Disney YouTubers out there cover special Halloween topics that are fun to watch as well. If you have some extra time and need a little nostalgia boost even, stream up some old movies or find some cartoons from when you were a kid.
The third way to have a Disney Halloween is to listen to Disney music. We love to use Spotify to listen to music from the Haunted Mansion, The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack or any Disney villain songs you can think of (think Scar from The Lion King or Dr. Facilier from The Princess & the Frog). It’s basically the same way they create the mashup for the Hocus Pocus Spectacular during the Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. You can go to Spotify and type “Disney Halloween” in the search bar. The work has already been done for you if you don’t want to make your own playlist. Confession — when I was younger, we would blare “This Is Halloween” from TNBC soundtrack on repeat on Halloween night through the windows of our house. I may be a little obsessed (someone help me). It was always a hit and still gets me amped up for Halloween to this day!
So, now that you are decorated and listening to some awesome jams while watching Disney Halloween movies, it’s time to get social. The next way to have a Disney Halloween is to be social. One of our favorite breweries nearby had Hocus Pocus trivia last week. How cool is that? And the turnout was insane. I say that to show that you never know what other Disney nerds live nearby until you get out there. I’m sure it’s not the only thing of its kind. Do yourself a favor and hop on the ole Facebook or Instagram and see if any local events are going on. Local spots are also almost all having Halloween parties. Just this past weekend I went to a local brewery’s Halloween party. You might ask, what does Disney have to do with that? Well, you can always dress as ANYTHING Disney. It’s your free excuse to be a total Disney fanatic and nobody will judge you for it! What could be better? In fact, you can even just go as a Disney fanatic. You’re welcome for the tip!
I want to say I haven’t forgotten about the actual parks themselves. We know the most ultimate way to have a Disney Halloween is to go to MNSSHP, but sometimes you just can’t get there. We were finally able to attend a couple of years ago and now we know what we are missing. This year, sadly, we were not able to attend, but then I remembered all the other ways we can still enjoy Halloween in a Disney way. I hope these tips have helped and you can start implementing them. As I mentioned above, Halloween is just about here and you might be thinking, “Too late, Beth.” I want to remind you that it’s never too late, and on the day after Halloween, all the Halloween decorations will be on sale! I’m sure that includes Disney items, and who doesn’t love a good sale!
A special thank you to @dougdoesdisney and Nicole Ellington for the use of their photography for this post!
