I think I may have mentioned this before — we love Disney with our kids. However, we also love to escape for a date night, if possible. A monorail crawl is a quick getaway where we can enjoy some of the Disney spots geared towards adults. You may also know that I am mildly obsessed with Disney resorts and what they have to offer.
Taking a nice ride around the monorail resort loop is what dreams are made of. I think that one of the reasons I love visiting all the resorts on the loop as an adult is partly because we never got off the monorail at the resorts when I visited Disney with my family as a kid. I remember the feeling of gliding into the Contemporary and wondering what it would be like to stay there. It may not be realistic to stay there for all people, however, we can all leave the monorail to enjoy the lobby or a tasty treat! Plus you can enjoy a little bit of Disney without a park ticket!
The Polynesian Resort
There are so many things to do here at any time of day. My number one favorite spot to grab a drink is Trader Sam’s
Grogg Grotto. This is a must-do in my book. I love the antics here. I love the snacks and the drinks. Everyone should visit this place at least once and check it off your Disney bucket list. Even if you are not a drinker, check out the non-alcoholic drinks and snacks and enjoy the atmosphere. Also, everyone should have a Disney bucket list right?
Check in, find out what the wait time is, and make your next plan. If the wait is not too long, just hang out on the beautiful patio. Grab a Dole Whip and chill in one of the relaxing swings by the water. Then, go on to enjoy the beauty of Trader Sam’s. Sit at the bar if at all possible. If the wait is too long (over an hour or so), put your name in and walk over to the Grand Floridan and grab a drink at Mizner’s Lounge. Trader Sam’s will send you a text when they have a spot open. You then have 10 minutes to make it back to Trader Sams. (Remember how I told you to pack those running shoes?)
The Grand Floridian
Take your time strolling through this lobby. Browse through the shops. Check out Basin White and look at all the cute soaps. Use some of the free sugar scrubs and make yourself feel fancy. There are a few great restaurants at this resort, including quick service, fine dining, and character meal locations. There is something for everyone.
I’ve mentioned it already — grab drink at Mizner’s Lounge and listen to the Society Orchestra. This small, little lounge is tucked away and a great place to grab a small bite and beverage. If you don’t want to spend any money on a drink or food, just enjoy the music from a couch in the lobby! I think this lobby is one of the most relaxing places on property. If you happen to be in the lobby mid-afternoon, you may be lucky enough to catch the cutest princess promenade. Cinderella and Prince Charming lead a group of littles down to the lobby and proceed with an elegant dance. It is really very sweet!
Hop back on the highway in the sky and head to the Contemporary. We recommend grabbing a drink at the Wave. Maybe it’s because blue is my favorite color, maybe because blue is soothing. Either way, I like this lounge. Grab a fun drink or a snack. If you are brave, you can tackle the Seven Seas Lagoon — a 24oz behemoth made for sharing.
If you are looking for a good dessert to end your day, the Contempo Cafe is home to the peanut butter pie mentioned by Producer Greg on almost every episode of the ZADD Crew podcast.
Pick your favorite spot to watch the fireworks on the last stop of your adventure. Head to either the California Grill Bar or the Top of the World Lounge. The Top of the World Lounge is only open to DVC members or their guests. (So, call your DVC friends.) Both of these locations are great places to grab a snack or drink without a reservation. Head outside and enjoy the music that is pumped onto the balcony. We love watching the show from a perch high above, without the crowds or the need to find an exit strategy. It’s a magical end to a magical trip around the resort loop.
Do you love to resort hop? What are your favorite spots?
