The Beach Club
The youngest Drennon has been begging us to take him to ride the pirate slide housed at Disney’s Beach Club Resort for the past several years. This kid loves a good water slide. Actually, this fact is a bit ironic since he hates all rides with any sort of drop in them… even Frozen and Pirates of the Caribbean.
My husband and I decided to spring for a one-night stay at the Beach Club for our little guy’s 5th birthday. Truth be told, a one-night stay was less expensive than a typical kids birthday party, and if we are honest, far less stressful.
Before he knew we’d be staying at the Beach club, we walked past the pool and just like he does every single time we walk by it, he asked if we could swim in the pool. This time, we suggested that he just head to the front deck and see if maybe they would have a room for him; it was his birthday, after all. The cast member at the front desk was a little confused about our 5-year-old asking permission to spend the night. I don’t think the CM understood that we were at the tail end of revealing the surprise night at the pool of his dreams. Instead, I think he thought we maybe we had grossly overvalued the magic of the Disney Birthday Celebration Pin.
At any rate, they had a room with his name on it — SURPRISE! (for the little guy as well as for the CM)
It took a while for the weather to cooperate, but we finally made it to Stormalong Bay.
Guys, this one is it! It’s the pool to beat all pools. But don’t even think about trying to sneak into this bad boy… Disney has this place on lockdown, scanning magic bands and requiring different wristbands each day. This is the largest pool on Disney property except for the water parks!
The slide at Stormalong Bay is the longest and fastest slide I have ever been on at a resort pool. To be honest, it was a
bit too fast for me, but the rest of my family loved it. I love a good poolside drink, but I am especially glad I did not have one prior to riding this slide. I was actively trying to slow myself down most of my descent. The boys and my husband loved it. My favorite part was probably the view from the top!
Stormalong Bay is prepared to cater to every guest, though. They also have a little slide in the front of the ship separate from the main pool (picture something for those 4 and under or scaredy cats, like me). This slide is not clearly marked and could be easily overlooked if you did not head out to the big slide itself. It’s a great little quiet pool with a mini slide, a pirate ship wheel, and beautiful views of the Boardwalk Resort.
The main pool itself is broken down into many parts. There are so many nooks that it didn’t feel crowded and it was easy to find a somewhat secluded spot. So, if you want to escape from the kids, it would be easy to do so. Stormalong Bay even had an adult only hot tub tucked away.
One of the coolest features of this pool is its sandy bottom. The pool bottom is covered in “sand” (a special type of synthetic sand made from recycled material that sinks. Real sand would stay suspended in the water and make a mess). There is a play area for the kids to dig with buckets and shovels in this “sand” right in the pool. They made a mini beach if you will. My kids could have messed around here for days. It is a super shallow area… with a hot tub for the parents within arms reach.
If that isn’t enough, Stormalong Bay has a lazy river as well. As far as lazy rivers go, don’t get too excited. It’s not lavish or fast, but it gets the job done. I only wish they had some inner tubes that are smaller or with the bottom solid (it’s a thing) for the kids. My kids are a little too small to fit in the adult-size inner tubes.
The pool is massive with an area for everyone from toddler to adult and enough pool space that you don’t feel on top of the other guests. If you are looking to spend some quality time in a pool, this is the spot for you! If you are like us and you could only swing one night at this beautiful resort, it is still worth it in my opinion. Plus Beaches and Cream is literally right outside the gates!
A special thank you to @thezipadeedoocrew for the use of his photos in this post!
