Let’s face it, if you are going to be at Disney for more then a couple of days, chances are that you will encounter rain at some point in your trip. And I HATE getting caught in the rain! For me, it really has to do with my hair. I have such crazy, frizzy, curly hair that takes hours to tame this beast. So, mix that in with the Florida rain and humidity and it’s NOT a pretty sight! Anyway, I try not to let the rain ruin my day. Here are some ideas that you can do to help you through a rainy day.
At first, I was dead set against using ponchos. I thought they looked both ridiculous and unhelpful. But boy was I wrong! (That’s me in the photo above! )When I caved and actually used a poncho, I was able to stay (mostly) dry! Now, there are two strategies you can go with this. The first one, buy a bunch from your local dollar store before you leave for your vacation. Then, each day you leave for the parks, throw one into your bag. If it starts to rain, you will have one all ready to go. Once it stops raining, you can throw it away instead of carrying around a wet poncho all day. After all, it was only a dollar. The second strategy would be to buy one from Disney. They are a little more expensive, but they are sturdier. Also, if it rips while you are in the park, Disney will replace it for free. If you are still dead set against ponchos, at least pack a lightweight umbrella.
Nothing is worse than a wet stroller and a cranky kid. If you bring your own stroller, make sure to purchase a waterproof stroller cover. If you are renting from a rental company, see if the rental comes with a free cover. Most do! If not, just ask! For more info about strollers in Disney, click here.
Don’t leave the Park!
No matter what park you are in, don’t leave! Crowds tend to be much lighter in the rain, so that means less wait times for you! And there are lots of covered or indoor attractions in WDW. Animal Kingdom is primarily an outdoor park, so compared to the other parks, this has the least amount of rides / attractions that are in indoors. If it rains, you can either leave and go to the other parks, or stay and take advantage of the lower wait times.
Wear the Right Clothes
Wearing lightweight clothes is not only essential to the Florida heat, but, also, if it rains, you will dry faster. Another tip… if you like to wear socks and sneakers to the parks, try to pack a pair of flip-flops in your bag. This way, when it rains, you can switch over to the flip-flops and not worry about having to walk around the rest of the day in soggy shoes.
If you really, really don’t like spending time in the rain, hop on the Monorail and spend some time at the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, and Contemporary resorts! All three resorts are all on the same Monorail loop, so you will have no problem getting from one to another. They all also have great quick service food locations, so you have plenty of choices of places to eat! Stroll around these amazing resorts and take in their beauty.
Waterproof Your Bag
If you are going to be spending any time in Disney, investing in a waterproof bag might be beneficial for you. If you have a favorite backpack that you like to bring to the parks, check out getting a waterproof backpack cover. If you want to buy one, click here. They are cheap and come in pretty different colors too!
During a storm, these guys will be your best friend. If you don’t have a waterproof bag, they are a necessity! Throw your phones, battery packs, and other small electronics in a bag so they don’t get wet. This has for-sure been a lifesaver during those rainy afternoons!
Disney Springs has tons to do while it’s raining. Shop till you drop! Catch a movie! Go bowling! Grab a meal! The options are endless here at Disney Springs, and provide great ways to spend your time in the rain.
So, see? You don’t have to fear rain in the forecast of your vacation. I know its not ideal, but try to make the most of it!
